Fire science is about much more than just fighting fires. It covers everything from what causes them to how they behave and are investigated. Fire science jobs require serious knowledge and skills, like those taught in accredited online fire science degree programs. Keep reading to learn all about online fire science degrees, including how they work and where to find top programs.

Returning Fire to the Land
By:

For thousands of years, the vast majority of fires on the land were intentionally set by Indigenous Peoples of this region for a variety of reasons.

Introduction to Prescribed Fire in Southern Ecosystems
By:

The history of fire in the forests and grasslands of the South is as varied as the different ecosystems that span this large region. At times, fires burned as often as once a year or more in Coastal Plain pine systems or as infrequently as every 50 years or more on north-facing or cove sites in the mountains.

Playing with Fire: Recreating Safely with Invasives in Sagebrush Country

If you’re recreating on public lands in the American West, you’ve probably already felt the impacts of the invasive annual grasses and wildfires that ruin habitat for wildlife and our outdoor activities.

Prescribed Burning in Southern Pine Forests
By:

Prescribed burning is an important wildlife management tool used in our southern pine forests. With an understanding of fire ecology, landowners can effectively apply techniques to improve wildlife habitat using the controlled application of fire.& ...

Healthy and Fire-Resilient Forest Management by the Confederated Tribes of the Colville Reservation
By:

This video from Washington Policy Center with cooperation from the Confederated Tribes of the Colville Reservation, sheds light on how the tribes manage forests to be more healthy using commercial harvests, thinnings, and controlled burns to deal with the pressures of insect infestation, climate change, and decades of fire suppression.

Fire Effects Information System

The Fire Effects Information System is an online collection of reviews of the scientific literature about fire effects on plants and animals and about fire regimes of plant communities in the United States. FEIS reviews are based on thorough literature searches, often supplemented with insights from field scientists and managers. FEIS provides reviews that are efficient to use, thoroughly documented, and defensible. Approximately 15 to 30 new or revised reviews are published in FEIS each year. There are 3 types of FEIS reviews:

  1. Species Reviews
  2. Fire Studies
  3. Fire Regime Syntheses

50 Fantastic Fire Science Resources

Every 23 seconds a fire erupts in the United States, according to the National Fire Protection Association, and, in 2011 alone, there were over 1.3 million fires that required fire department intervention. Not only are firefighters brave, they are also very busy!

Firefighters often begin their careers by volunteering at local firehouses, joining the junior firefighter league or undergoing training through municipal fire companies. They might also choose to pursue a program in fire science, a path that could end with an associate or bachelor’s degree. The following resources are meant to help aspiring firefighters understand what the job requires, plan for the education and training they will undergo and keep abreast of the field with the latest research, publications and blogs from firefighters who are in the line of duty every day.

Fire Safety Guide Book

Approximately 140 students complete fire science programs every year in Arkansas at one of the state’s three accredited fire science schools. A significant number of these fire science graduates come out of the Arkansas Fire Training Academy at Southern Arkansas University Tech. Although the number of graduating fire science students is relatively low, their job prospects are wide-ranging. In addition to firefighting and fire service administration, potential career opportunities also include inspecting structures for fire safety or analyzing and investigating the causes of fires.

Fire science education in Arkansas is limited to certificates and associate degrees. Programs range in focus from fire and emergency response to fire science technology to fire services management. Degree programs explore the knowledge and skills that aspiring fire professionals need to enter the workforce, while also offering preparation for specialized career choices.

LANDFIRE Program

LANDFIRE - multi-partner wildland fire, ecosystem, and wildland fuel mapping projectLANDFIRE is a program that provides over 20 national geo-spatial layers (e.g. vegetation, fuel, disturbance, etc.), databases, and ecological models that are available to the public for the US and insular areas.

You can view and download products which are updated every two years to reflect change on the landscape over time. These data provide information for regional and national landscape strategic planning for fire and natural resource management activities.

Keep tabs on wildfire activity via this U.S. Geological Survey website, GeoMAC.

Point and Click to Track Wildfire Activity in the United States.  Wildfires continue to burn across much of the western United States, and 39,000 fires have scorched 5,899,245 acres this year as of August 7, 2017 according to the National Interagency Fire Center

Is Your Property Safe From Wildfire?
By:

Fire is an important natural process of forests and rangelands. But while fire plays an important role in the ecology of these areas, it can be devastating if homes, valuable timber, and range areas are destroyed.

After the Fires - Hydrophobic Soils
By:

Hydrophobic soils repel water. A thin layer of soil at or below the mineral soil surface can become hydrophobic after intense heating. The hydrophobic layer is the result of a waxy substance that is derived from plant material burned during a hot fire.

Lack of prescribed burns fuels rise of megafires, ASU fire historian says
By:

Wildfire is a striking story, often filled with the drama of danger. But there's a narrative missing from many of the reports: We need more controlled fires to prevent these runaway infernos, said fire historian and Arizona State University Regents’ Professor Stephen Pyne.

Sustainable Forests Roundtable

The Sustainable Forests Roundtable is an open and inclusive process committed to the goal of sustainable forest management on public and private lands in the United States. Roundtable participants include public and private organizations and individuals committed to better decision-making through shared learning and increased understanding.

The purpose of the Roundtable is to serve as a forum to share information and perspectives that will enable better decision making in the United States regarding sustainable forests. The Roundtable serves to promote shared leadership and responsibility in contributing toward achievement of sustainable forests on public and private lands throughout the United States. This purpose is actualized through efforts to:

  • Provide a forum for dialogue about sustainable forest issues, including national and sub-nationalcriteria and indicator efforts;
  • Broaden and deepen public understanding and adoption of sustainable forest management practices;
  • Facilitate the coordinated assessment and reporting of the sustainability of the Nation’s forest resources;
  • Communicate and coordinate data and programs within the sustainable forest community;
  • Serve as a venue for connecting domestic and global forest issues; and
  • Demonstrate on-the-ground benefits of sustainable forest management through the efforts of local and regional champions.

The fundamental approach of the Roundtable in carrying out its purpose is based on the belief that better data will lead to better dialogue about the sustainability of the nation’s forest resources, which will in turn lead to more informed, better decisions by stakeholders.

Since its inception in 1998, the Roundtable's primary focus has been the domestic implementation of an internationally agreed upon set of criteria and indicators (C&I) contained in the Santiago Declaration of the Montreal Process for the purpose of developing a shared understanding of current forest conditions and a baseline against which to mark future progress toward sustainability and was instrumental in the development and release of the National Report on Sustainable Forests in 2003 and 2010. Roundtable efforts since completion of these reports have focused on stimulating stakeholder dialogue on the meaning of the reports, actively engaging local and regional champions in their implementation of C&I at sub-national scales, and preparing for the next national report in 2015.

The ownership and management characteristics of the nation’s forest resources present uniquely difficult challenges in adopting and reporting on sustainable forest management in the United States. Because there is no national program or policy for sustainable forests on all lands, the Roundtable fulfills a critical role by providing a venue for all stakeholders to share perspectives and develop implementation ideas in order to broaden and deepen the application of sustainable forest management on the ground.

The Roundtable is not a decision-making body, but rather an open forum comprised of voluntary participants to share information and perspectives about the sustainable management of the nation’s forests. The overall goal is to engage federal, state, private, and non-profit organization leadership in committing to collaborative capacity building that will improve the forest sector’s ability to promote sustainable forest management. This work includes making linkages to international sustainable forest issues and other roundtables, forums, and processes focused on other natural resources.

Reasons for Prescribed Fire in Forest Management

A summary of all the benefits of prescribed fire in southern forests.

The Southern Forest Futures Project

The Southern Forest Futures Project provides a science-based “futuring” analysis of the forests of the 13 States of the Southeastern United States. With findings organized in a set of scenarios and using a combination of computer models and science synthesis, the authors of the Southern Forest Futures Project examine a variety of possible futures that could shape forests and the many ecosystem services and values that forests provide. The science findings and modeling results could inform management and policy analysis of the South’s forests. In the chapters of this technical report, the authors provide detailed findings and results as well as sets of key findings and implications.

Protecting your forest asset - managing risks in changing times

  • Provide a forum for dialogue about sustainable forest issues, including national and sub-nationalcriteria and indicator efforts;
  • Broaden and deepen public understanding and adoption of sustainable forest management practices;
  • Facilitate the coordinated assessment and reporting of the sustainability of the Nation’s forest resources;
  • Communicate and coordinate data and programs within the sustainable forest community;

Don’t Move Firewood

Trees are being destroyed through the transportation of invasive insects & diseases in firewood. One of the most important things we can do to protect trees is stop moving invasive pests and diseases to new areas on firewood. It’s really that simple- don't move firewood, and keep trees healthy and alive. Forests are great places to play, but they also keep our air clean and our water pure. We must protect them by not moving firewood, so our kids, grandkids and great-grandkids can enjoy these amazing places like we do.

The Don't Move Firewood campaign is managed on a day-to-day basis by The Nature Conservancy's Forest Health Protection Program staff. Don't Move Firewood as a whole was begun, and is advised, by the Continental Dialogue on Non-native Insects and Diseases. Select a state to get localized information.
