Emerald Ash Borer Treatment Program Updated:03/2020

The Virginia Department of Forestry (VDOF) distributes funds in a 50/50 cost-share program for the treatment of ash trees threatened by Emerald Ash Borer (EAB).  Find out more about EAB Cost Share Program and the Application Process and additional Information

VDOF will reimburse 50 percent of direct treatment costs, not to exceed:

  1. $7.50 per diameter inch, matched by landowner or organization for a total rate of $15 per inch
  2. $1,250 per landowner or $5,000 per organization, matched for a total project cost of $2,500 per landowner or $10,000 per organization.

Eligible applicants include individual landowners as well as organizations such as municipalities, non-profits, schools, universities, and homeowner’s associations. Only trunk injection treatment of an emamectin benzoate product will qualify for cost-share. Ash trees must be at least 12 inches in diameter (DBH) and do not display canopy loss greater than 30 percent (determined by local VDOF forester).

A quote/bid must be obtained from a certified Pesticide Applicator to be submitted with the Cost-Share Application (Form 6.5). Prior to treatment, a local VDOF Forester must inspect and approve the tree(s) of interest, then submit to VDOF HQ. If the project is approved, the applicant will receive an approval letter and treatment can then begin.

There is more to the EAB program than just the cost-share! Check out our StoryMap for more info.
