Mike began his legal career as a judicial law clerk for the Fourteenth Judicial Circuit of Virginia from 1999-2000 before joining Spotts Fain immediately following his clerkship. He focuses his practice on land use and zoning, real estate litigation and administrative law.
Over the years, Mike has devoted a large amount of time to real estate and land use matters. He routinely advises developers and property owners on land use and zoning issues in jurisdictions throughout Virginia. Mike’s work in this area of the law also includes extensive experience in land use and other real estate related litigation. He has represented large national retailers and local property owners in obtaining necessary land use approvals as well as challenging actions taken by local governing bodies and administrative officials.
As a result of his litigation experience and extensive interaction with governmental bodies, Mike has also developed a diverse administrative law practice. Mike has worked with, appeared before and/or handled administrative proceedings involving numerous boards, commissions and state agencies, including the Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ), the Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC), the Department of Medical Assistance Services (DMAS), the Motor Vehicle Dealer Board (MVDB), the Virginia Department of Labor and Industry (DOLI), the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) and the Bureau of Financial Institutions (BFI).
