Conservation Marketing Warehouse Updated:02/2015

Virginia’s 47 soil and water conservation districts (SWCDs) play a major role in improving Virginia’s water quality. Districts are the state’s most direct link with farmers across Virginia. With increased attention to agricultural impacts on the state’s impaired streams and the Chesapeake Bay, districts’ ability to effectively reach and communicate with local farmers is more important than ever.

Efforts to increase cost-share funding have been successful. To get the most out of that money, five conservation practices have been identified as priority practices: continuous no-till, cover crops, nutrient management, riparian buffers and streamside livestock exclusion.

More money and sharper focus are steps in the right direction. We also must use new tools and messages to more aggressively communicate with farmers. A business-oriented, marketing approach is needed.

That’s why DCR contracted with a marketing firm to conduct research and develop professional materials SWCDs can use in one-on-one marketing to farmers. Districts will find everything needed to sell conservation practices and cost-share in this digital warehouse. Districts may use these materials as they see fit.
